Plume Pods

Most current Wi-Fi solutions stumble when everyone is home with a few devices streaming 4K content, game systems trying to connect, a few portable devices roaming the house and your neighbor's router competing for channels.   A single router can no longer meet the Wi-Fi demands of most homes today.  It’s easy to promise full coverage WiFi when conditions are perfect but with today's multi storied homes it's becoming almost impossible.

Plume is the only WiFi solution powered by the cloud, which means it can adapt to real life in real-time—ensuring every room and every device has a reliably fast connection today, tomorrow, and years from now.  Rather than relying on a router that sits in one place and hopefully covers all the space we need, Plume takes a different approach and offers something it calls pods that can be plugged directly into wall sockets around the home.  Plume Pods are beautiful but you don’t have to see them, they plug into any wall outlet, leaving your surfaces free of hardware. And the best part is that you get to keep your neighboring plug space.

Plume's technology uses Adaptive WiFi that is able to respond to varying conditions around the home. Plume maximizes your WiFi by optimizing the flow of data. The low frequency 2.4 GHz WiFi band has a longer range but slower speeds than the high frequency 5 GHz band with higher speeds and shorter range. Plume strategically figures out which band to use for each device based on where it is and what application it’s running.  Plume recommends a pod for each room of the house to give complete coverage. The Pods are controlled by something called the Plume Cloud to provide more speed and connectivity than you get with a single router network.

The system is setup using a mobile app and will allow for guest access.  The pods will launch in the fall and will sell for $49 each at that time.

Samsung Otto

At the Samsung's annual Developer Conference in San Francisco, the company introduced a prototype "digital personal assistant" called Otto similar to Amazon Echo.   Samsung said the Otto is a "reference design" and won't be available anytime soon.  Instead it will be used by developers to introduce other concepts of home automation.
Many companies are developing products for the smart home and being able to walk into a room and say "lights on," without having to locate the wall switch will be very useful.  Changing the room temperature without having to physically get off your couch or touch the thermostat would be pretty neat.

Otto has a rotating head that swivels and moves up and down which presumably will be useful to give it a little personality. The rotating head has an HD camera that can be used for facial recognition.  It might be able to recognize who's talking or entering the room and respond accordingly.  Otto could also be useful as a security camera to detect an intruder walking into a room if the front door was locked and none of the owners mobile phones were in range.  Otto could send out a text message with an attached photo.

Hikari Box Tiny House

If you are looking for a tiny house that is modern and spacious then look no further than the Hikari Box Tiny House from designer and builder Shelter Wise.  The Hikari Box house is only 24 feet long yet offers 184 square feet of ground floor, with 79 more square feet in a loft sufficient for a queen bed and another 23 square foot loft for storage or a twin bed.  The house features 14 windows which should provide plenty light.  Hikari” is Japanese for “light-filled"

The Bufalino

The Bufalino is a one-person camper using the Piaggio APE 50 as its platform.  It was designed to allow one person to live in it and be protected from the elements.  The engine, frame, chassis and part of the cab are original APE.

The APE is a unique vehicle because of its extremely economical working nature.  Inside the Bufalino you’ll find a bed, two seatings, a cooking zone, basin, relatively lots of storage, a refrigerator, and more.  It is very economical because it uses only a tiny amount of gas.

Playbulb Garden LED

Mipow‘s Playbulb Garden LED lighting system operates with solar energy and illuminate in a rainbow of colors.  These LED lights are perfect to illuminate the yard and since they use solar energy they are "green".  Playbulb’s solar panel soaks up the light during the day for storage in its lithium-ion internal battery and when fully charged the device will work up to 20 hours. A built-in sensor can detect nightfall, automatically turning on and off at the appropriate times.

The company will offer the free Playbulb X app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.   The lights syncs through Bluetooth, allowing you to change the color and apply special effects.  Current settings include rainbow, rainbow fading, pulsing, flashing, and candle light

MIMA House

MIMA House is an exquisite house manufactured in Portugal. It is unique for its ability to be reconfigured by the owners in project and also post-delivery.  The interior walls consist of lightweight panels that can be easily relocated or removed by two people.  The house has a square plan with the four facades being nearly identical.  Corner posts support the roof so that the intervening walls can be entirely glass. The exterior styling is unabashedly modern with clean lines and crisply folded edges.  The L-shaped prefabricated house is assembled in portugal by MIMA architects.
This compact prefabricated dwelling is known as the MIMA house and is located in southern portugal in the alentejo province.

A house among trees

“25 Green” is a five-Story residential building in Turin, Italy with over 200 trees growing out of its balconies and roof.   The residential unit produces over 150.000 liters of oxygen per hour during the day and consumes 200.000 liters of carbon dioxide at night.

The building is built in steel and it looks like a forest with trees rooted in terraces with irregular shapes.   Ponds and lush gardens cover the roofs. The building is like a living forest.  Not only do the trees clean the air around the building but also dampen noise pollution, provide shade, and help regulate the building’s temperature.
The residential unit is like a child's dream of a treehouse but in a bigger scale.

100 Years Later

100 years later, Antarctic explorers' huts look frozen in time

About a hundred years after Antarctic explorers set up house on the coldest, driest, and windiest place on Earth, conservators have restored four of these landmarks to look as they did in their former heydays.  The wooden dwellings of early explorers have been restored to look as they did during the first treks to the continent in the early 1900s, whiskey and all.
